A Phoenix company is helping keep homes safe from fires with 'Green Cork Spray'

PHOENIX — Now that it's almost spring, wildfire season is right around the corner.

As many begin to prepare their homes for the increasing dangers, a local product is already protecting Arizona homeowners from fires.

Made in Phoenix, green cork spray is an exterior coating similar to paint. Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak tree. According to Green Cork Products Founding Partner Randy Bailey, cork is 100 percent natural and recyclable. Green cork spray is a sustainable, more cost-effective alternative to cement-based stucco.

You'll see new homes throughout the Valley constructed with this durable material. However, green cork spray can be applied to any existing structure.

"We're truly the only product in North America that has that sustainability, renewability and then also has that Class A fire rating to help with the fire abatement of any kind of structure. This could be an exterior coating that would help insurance companies accept that fact that a home is less likely to burn," explained Bailey.

He is on a mission. In addition to protecting life and property, Bailey is helping others put out different types of fires — insurance issues.

"Insurance companies are seeing the risk of fire so high that they're starting to either greatly increase premiums on homeowners or in fact not offer any kind of insurance. So what we're hoping is that our product can become a part of the total solution," Bailey said. "In our recent meetings with fire officials in northern Arizona, we found that there's really no document that the insurance companies can give a homeowner that says if you do these things, then we will give you insurance for fire. So we're hoping to work with fire professionals across the country and especially here in Arizona."

Green cork spray is already available and easily accessible. While it's produced in Phoenix and used throughout Arizona, the product is also shipped across the United States.

"If you were up in Payson or in Flagstaff and you have a home that you are greatly concerned about fire risk, we can literally spray this next week," said Bailey.

As Arizona gets hotter and drier and the fire season gets longer, local, sustainable products like green cork spray will make homes and structures more fire-resistant.
